Shy Glizzy was born Marquis Amonte King on December 12, 1992, at Greater Southeast Community Hospital and grew upwards on 37th St., near Fort Dupont Park, in Southeast Washington, D.C.[2] His father was shot and killed at xix years quondam ,[iv] before Shy's kickoff birthday. He grew up in a household with his female parent, grandmother, and his younger brother, 3 Glizzy. At historic period 9, he was arrested for petty larceny.[2] At age 16, he was arrested for a robbery and spent 14 months in juvenile detention,[five] where he also earned his GED.[four]

He received his nickname "Shy" during early childhood.[6] He is Muslim.[vii] As a teenager, he began reading the Quran, and then the daily newspaper and stacks of biographies, before starting to write raps.[2] He was initially "trying to write a volume, but it concluded up being a song."[5] Shy has stated he did not listen to rap music growing up but rather go-go music, which he credits for helping to create his own unique audio.[two]

2011–2013 [edit]

In 2011, Shy Glizzy released his debut project, titled No Brainer, in January. He released his second mixtape, Streets Hottest Youngin, on October 31.[viii]

On June 6, 2012, Shy released his 3rd mixtape titled Police. He was also featured by Circuitous on its listing of "10 New DMV Rappers To Lookout man Out For."[ix] The Washington Metropolis Paper 's Ramon Ramirez referred to it as "a well-connected tape [which] sometimes feels like information technology wants to be a major-label-debut", featuring guest appearances from Project Pat and Wale and production from Beat Billionaire, just described Shy every bit existence "less polished, and more than frenetic, while his hooks are repetitive and droning but besides hungry and catchy."[iv]

On January vii, 2014, Shy Glizzy was listed by Fact as i of "10 Rappers to Watch in 2014".[14] On January xx, he appear his seventh mixtape, Young Jefe, which went on to be released on Feb 17, and included invitee appearances from the likes of Immature Scooter, PeeWee Longway, Young Thug, Plies and Gudda Gudda.[fifteen] From that mixtape, the hitting unmarried "Awwsome" turned into the biggest song of his career and peaked at number 45 on the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[16] It spawned a remix off the record that features A$AP Rocky and ii Chainz that grabbed more than 750,000 streams on SoundCloud in the start calendar week of its release.[17]

On June iii, 2015, Shy Glizzy was selected as part of the XXL magazine Freshman Grade list.[18] That same day he released his 9th mixtape, Exist Careful, a 16-track collaborative projection with his Glizzy Gang collective which included members 30 Glizzy, Goo Glizzy and three Glizzy.[19] On August 28, Shy announced his tenth mixtape, For Trappers Only, entirely produced by Zaytoven to be released on September thirty.[20] It included guest appearances from the likes of Boosie Badazz, Yo Gotti and Ty Dolla $ign.

On July eight, 2016, Shy Glizzy announced his 11th mixtape, Immature Jefe two, to be released on July xv.[21]

In a December 2014 interview with The Fader, when asked about his thoughts on "DMV rap", Shy responded "DMV all the same didn't become a thing. Nobody opened up a lane for DMV rap [...] I opened up my lane. I opened up Glizzy Gang lane, the southeast DC lane."[22] Notwithstanding, in a Jan 2017 interview with The Fader, when asked most the state of DC'south rap scene, Shy responded "I'grand trying to open up that lane then more youngsters tin come through. No one else ever opened that door for me [...] I got a whole civilisation—the D, the 1000, and the 5—to put on for."[23]

2017–present [edit]

On January 6, 2017, Shy Glizzy released an EP, The World is Yours, under the stage name 'Jefe'.[23] [24] HipHopDX's Aaron McKrell described it equally "an energetic merely hollow offering" just praised Shy Glizzy's delivery and "ability to manipulate vocal sonics." He rated the project 2.7 out of 5.[25] Pitchfork'due south Sheldon Pearce stated that it "isn't King at the elevation of his powers [...] Hither, he mostly seems content to roll leisurely through verses" and showed "no sense of urgency." He rated the projection six.9 out of ten.[26]

The single "Take Me Abroad" was released on September 29.[27] He released his 12th mixtape Repose Storm on Dec 12,[28] which he described every bit his "all-time trunk of work notwithstanding."[29]

In 2018, Shy Glizzy released his debut studio album, Fully Loaded, on October 18, which included guest appearances from YoungBoy Never Bankrupt Again, Lil Uzi Vert, Young Thug, Gunna, and Rick Ross.[30] The album received positive reviews[31] [32] and peaked at number 35 on the US Billboard 200, selling 14,446 album-equivalent units in the first week.[33] It was appear that Glizzy will embark on nationwide bout with Atlanta rapper Gunna on his Drip or Drown 2 tour.

In an April interview with HipHopDX's Daniela Evgenivna, Glizzy appear he would be releasing his 2nd studio album titled Covered 'Northward Blood on April 19.[34] He described the album as being more personal than the characteristic packed Fully Loaded stating "It's a really deep album. A lot of my music is like a diary. This ane is about what I've been going through the terminal few months."[34] On Apr 19, Covered n' Blood was released every bit Glizzy'due south second Billboard 200-charting record, peaking at 156. Shy ended 2019 with a 2nd mixtape titled 'Aloha', inspired by and recorded on the isle of Hawaii.[35] On April 10, 2020, he released the unmarried "Lonely Vibes".[36] He released the vocal "Correct Or Incorrect" with Lil Uzi Vert on June 19.[37] On September xviii, 2020, Shy Glizzy released his new projection, Young Jefe three.
